With fashion constantly moving full circle, we find ourselves evoking the 1920s flapper style due in no small part to the recent release of Baz Luhrmanns The Great Gatsby. A remake of the classic 1974 movie.
Baz Luhrmanns films are renowned for their visual imagery with the scenery and costumes as important as the script. And with Catherine Martin as the designer working in collaboration with, Prada and Tiffany and co. It’s no wonder the 1920s fashion is on trend once more. Martin focuses a lot on the elaborate headwear of the 20’s, which is something Cornish Milliner Holly Young knows all about.

With her background in costume Holly has created a selection of 20’s inspire hats that draw a striking similarity to those features in the Baz Luhrmanns film. From cloches to headdresses the glamorous headpieces are attracting a lot of attention.

The cloche hat was worn as an everyday hat in the 20’s, a fashion statement but also a practability. With modern celebrities like Kate Middleton wearing hats on any occasion it has become the norm to see everyday people wearing hats. But Holly’s cloche’s stand out from the crowd with the rich coloured rabbit hair felts and art deco inspired pins her cloche hats are making an everyday hat become a hat fit for any occasion.Gatsby_inspired_Bridal_headbands

The 1920’s headdress have become the latest zeitgeist in female accessories especially when it come to brides. Holly who has a forte for bridal wear has recently had a whimsical shoot with Emma Griffin showing off some of her 20’s inspired bridal wear. Take a look at her ‘woodland shoot’.
Her bridal pieces show off the delicate femininity of the 20s with soft lace, bleached feathers and embellished with pearls, glass beads and crystals they can make any bride look as show stopping as Carey Mulligan in a Catherine Martin design.

As well as replicating the past holly likes to use vintage decorations like lace,
feathers and broaches . Some of them handed down from past generations in her family.

Holly also likes to make millinery accessible to everyone in the form of her fascinator kits, look out for the up and coming 1920’s ostrich feather headband a way of creating your very own Great Gatsby headpiece.
