Real Brides Mermaid Crown

My favourite part of my job has to be meeting amazing different characters from all walks of life. I feel very honoured that I get to make special accessories for them to wear to important life events.

Emily the gorgeous bride in this real Cornish wedding, was no exception. She is an incredibly talented actress and singer and her husband Stuart has his own beer company and runs foraging workshops at festivals and other outdoor spaces...With a creative couple like that, what better way to celebrate their passions than with an ourdoor wedding full of music, performance, food, laughter and love.

Emily who feels at home by the sea and with her long red, mermaid like hair, a bespoke shell crown was the perfect option... Emily and Stuart had tied the knot legally a couple of week before the main wedding day, at their favourite magic spot on the isles of Scilly (just off the coast of Cornwall). Knowing that I was making her crown, Emily collected shells especially for her creation so that it contained extra sentimental value. I also collected shells from my local beach on the Roseland Peninsular so that we used all natural un-dyed local shells. Together with an odd earring, collected sea glass, some beads, chains and a quartz crystal to create that 'buried treasure' feel.

Emily says: “We didn’t really have a theme to our wedding but the core elements were that it was personal and had a homemade feel. Everything from us building archways and decorating with homemade bunting to my mum writing the ceremony and family and friends performing it.

I’d admired Holly’s work from the Christmas before the wedding, my husband and I had popped in visiting the Christmas fair and I remember wanting to try everything on and being in ore of the feathers, colours and textures. When I was offered a piece for the wedding in exchange for a days modelling, I jumped at the chance.

I really wanted each element of my outfit to mean something to me and have a story. I’d come across pictures of ‘mermaid crowns’ and fell in love. It worked perfectly for me; in my career I have played mermaids, the connection to cornwall and the sea and the theatrical element it gave. Holly and I worked closely together to get it just right and a truly personal, bespoke piece. The outcome was more than I could have expected. I wore it with pride and felt magical and beautiful. The whole wedding process had huge ups and downs but creating this piece with Holly was by far one of the best moments.”

It was a total surprise to her groom who, himself sported a kilt in the traditional yellow Cornish tartan and matching bow tie. Guests were encouraged to dress however they felt comfortable and ready to dance in wellies if needs be. Friends and family got up on stage and performed songs and poems and the couple danced the night away in the big top tent.
